ABOUT HUNT EMERSON

Born in Newcastle in 1952, and resident in Birmingham since the early 1970s, Hunt Emerson has drawn comics for over 40 years. His work has been widely published locally, nationally and internationally, and he has become known as Birmingham’s Cartoonist – a title he is proud to acknowledge, as he has come to love his adopted city.

He has published more than 30 books of his iconoclastic comic strips, including “The Cartoon Lady Chatterley’s Lover”, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, “Casanova’s
Last Stand” and “Dante’s Inferno”. Most recently, he published “Bloke’s Progress”, an exploration in comics of the ideas of Victorian artist, critic and philosopher John Ruskin – an arguably dry subject matter turned comical!

In 2000 Hunt was chosen for inclusion in the exhibition “75 Masters of European Comic Art” by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the CNBDI, Angouleme. This year – 2018 – he has been given a Sergio Award (named after Sergio Aragones) by the National Cartoonists Society on America.

Hunt worked at Birmingham Art’s Lab in the 70’s and as part of the catalogue for its 30th anniversary he created a beautiful colour illustration which is included in this exhibition alongside giclee prints available for sale.
